Our speaker, Paul Ross, is Chairman of the Silver City Association (as well as being a member of the Friends) and will tell the story of Silver City in a well illustrated talk covering the company’s operations, its aircraft and personnel.
Silver City Airways was formed in 1946 to support mining interests in Australia. However, in 1948, the company established a cross-Channel car ferry service between Lympne and Le Touquet using Bristol Freighter aircraft. This service proved such a success that larger aircraft were employed from 1953 and the company opened its own airport at Lydd the following year. Silver City continued in operation until 1962 when it merged with Channel Air Bridge to form part of the new British United group. The last cross-Channel car ferry service operated in 1971. In addition to operating the Air Ferry, Silver City undertook many other activities over the years.
